· Bill Bush · Bill Bush “lives in Halstead, Kansas with his two teenage children, who are the inspiration behind many of his stories.” Sydney and Blake are remarkable. Just ask their father. Or read the dedication to them in his science fiction book, Vetrix (2017). He states: “You inspire me more than you will ever know.” I met Bill at the Newton Public Library (KS) when he was giving an author talk. Even though I wasn’t a fan of the science fiction genre and I don’t write for young … [Read more...] about Writer, Author, Publisher

Major League Baseball
· Chicago White Sox · I learned to be a Chicago White Sox fan from my dad. He loved sports, and once we moved near Chicago, the major league teams available in the city were like a playground for him. My dad worked long and hard hours, but my memory of attending so many professional games in the city was proof he did have leisure time. I can still feel the excitement when the crowd would roar. I can taste the mustard and pickle relish on the hot dogs. I remember wishing for a ball to be … [Read more...] about Major League Baseball
Writers Write
· Elsa's World · I interviewed a young writer friend of mine today. Her name is Elsa. She’s fifteen. We’re from the same tribe; we love writing. Elsa shared with me, telling me about the dystopian novel she’s writing and I’m so excited for her! The project sounds huge yet it’s clearly manageable in her capable hands. I love a lot of things about her stories and I’m really pleased to find her creating a fictional … [Read more...] about Writers Write

· Do You Make Time for Your Writing? · In an earlier blog, I asked you: "What's Your Writing Routine?" (https://jimpotterauthor.com/writing-routine-2/) I talked about how I get up early and write the first thing in the morning. I do it then because my brain is trained; it wants to get to work. Another big benefit is that by being first on my list, there aren't distractions. I can devote my time to my writing. If you're having trouble getting started or getting back to your writing … [Read more...] about Fear of Failing
Characters and Setting
· The Beginning of the Story is Called Exposition · When you start reading a book, you want to know so many things all at once. The primary question I ask myself is, "Am I interested in reading this book?" because there are so many books to read and so little time to read them. The writing has to grab me, or "hook" me to keep me reading. You may be one of those readers that will give the author a very short amount of time or window before deciding that the book doesn't fit your style … [Read more...] about Characters and Setting
